Tuesday's earthquake, which had a magnitude of 5.1, was brought on by the Calaveras Fault strike-slip fault line. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 4-mile deep epicenter was located 12 miles (19 kilometers) east of San Jose (6 kilometers) at 11:42 a.m local time. A hilly region lies about 40 miles (64 kilometers) southeast of San Francisco's central business district.
